Dolphins has been always my favourite animal, my heart fills of joy and happiness as soon as I see a dolphin, even it is only a picture of it. A few weeks ago while watching my favourite Oprah show, I had a shock of my life when she talked about how they treat the dolphins in Japan, and she interviewed the writer and the Producer of the documentary movie The Cove.
The Cove winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, The Cove follows a high-tech dive team on a mission to discover the truth about the international dolphin capture trade as practiced in Taiji, Japan. Utilizing state-of-the-art techniques, including hidden microphones and cameras in fake rocks, the team uncovers how this small seaside village serves as a horrifying microcosm of massive ecological crimes happening worldwide.
The Cove exposes not only the tragedy of dolphin slaughtering in Japan, but also the dangerously high levels of mercury in dolphin meat and seafood, the cruelty in capturing dolphins for entertainment, and the depletion of our ocean’s fisheries by worldwide seafood consumption. We also see how the mandate of the International Whaling Commission has been manipulated by the Japanese Fisheries Agency for its benefit and its subsequent effect on the rest of the world.
I ecourage you all to see the movie, it has shocking informations about how these harmless aminals has been treated. for The cove FB link click here.
My son (almost 7 years old) wrote his first fiction story all by himself. Usually I set with him while he is writing his stories and I normally help a lot. Last Thursday it was the first time for him to set by himself and write from his own mind and use his own imagination to write a story. All what I did is just giving him a list of a story starters (Which you can find some of them if you click here, here and here), he choosed one of them, after that he thought about what exactly had happened in the story and then wrote it down. I was extremely happy when he read it to me. He typed it in Ms word and he asked me in post it in Nomaddia.
As I promised him to do so, please take a few minutes and read his story and comment below, which I’m sure he will appreciate.
My adventure.
It was absolutely enormous I couldn’t believe my eyes, the trouble was it appeared to be getting bigger and bigger. I leaned closer and it was an egg. The egg was cracking the cracks noise had waken up the mummy dinosaur.
So I ran and ran until I saw a cave. I hid in it, “ Whoooof, that was close” I said. When I went deep inside the cave I saw a huge body, it turns out to be a bear. I did not know that there was a bear, so I woke up the bear and the dinosaur broke the cave door. After that, two of them tried to chase me. I ran and I ran until I found another cave, which took me to another world. Luckily, the dinosaur would not fit, but the bear managed to got in the cave. While I was still running inside the cave, the bear had stumble at a sharp rock. The bear started crying, and its foot started to bleed, I helped him. After that he was happy we played and played until we were tired then we slept together.
Finally it was morning I realized that I had to get back to my house so I told the bear to take me back so the bear did, and the dinosaur was sad because she would not fit into the cave, so I made her happy and I told her to take me home fast so she did my mum was happy to see me and she said: “Where have you been?”. “Long story mum” I replied. She gave me a big kiss and a big hug, and we lived happily ever after.
The end.

That is almost what I’m talking about all day, with my family, my friends and even people I don’t know or I just met. It seems that it is not easy to find good school here in Jeddah. Every school has its won positives and negatives issues, and parents are all lost!
Neither in the UK nor in Kuwait had I found such difficulties in finding a good school for my son, simply because you will not find a huge difference with minimum choices between schools.
In the UK for example, either you go with independent/private school (When you can afford it!), which is well documented with all the school results and achievements. Plus the fact that you have a variety of schools to choose from depends on what you are looking for . For example Gender – co-educational, single sex or boys and girls, Day or Boarding school, and Religious affiliation.. etc. Add to that, you will find in the internet plenty of sources which can be great help in your school hunting. I found the Independent schools council website very useful and full of information you might need.
If you are planning to go for state school in the United Kingdom, so The good school guide is the also an excellent recourse for any information you are looking for regarding any school youyou want to pick for your loving ones. Plus the fact that in the UK, if you live in a good area, most likely you will have a good schools in your neighborhood. So as you can see it is quite easy to find what you are looking for.
In Kuwait, it is not as much organized as you wish, but still you can find a respectful schools with a history that you can look at and hear about from people, plus the fact that Kuwait Ministry of education obliged all the schools in Kuwait including British, American and French schools, to teach Arabic and Islamic studies in the school for Arabic and Muslim Students, which is great. Add to that, that the school fees are monetor by the Minsity of education and they are not cheap but compare to Saudi Arabia, they definatley are!
But in Jeddah, we have a completely different story! Schools here are in huge miss. To me; they are as many as Bakalahs (Corner shops) they are everywhere, plenty of them. Some of them advertise about themselves, by sticking posters about the school on street walls and lamps, which is to me a sign of desperation. The Private Arabic schools, are offering only the Saudi Ministry of Education curriculum plus Islamic studies. In the International schools, most of them offers an American curriculum with a very weak Arabic and Islamic studies, and depends on the school administration the Arabic and Islamic study curriculum will be. Some of the admin department from the school I visited are Lebanese you will find the Arabic and Islamic studies are from Lebanon! But if the admin department from Egypt you will find the Arabic and Islamic studies are from Egypt, although, other schools have a mixed curriculum between Egypt for Islamic studies and Lebanon curriculum for Arabic studies. Which is in my opinion both Egyptian and Lebanese curriculums are weak in both Arabic and Islamic studies, compare to Kuwait and Saudi’s curriculum. It ends up you pay lots of money with limited benefits.
Once I visited an International school in Jeddah to have a look around and for my son to have a test, and I spoke in English with the admin lady who was showing me around the school. She asked me if I’m looking for a job, and I asked her: “Do you have any vacancy available?” she said: “You can be a teacher!” I told her that I’m not in teaching field, and she said: ” that is ok, some people have talent for teaching” then I said: “no, I don’t have that talent and I never learned anything about children and teaching”. But she still insisting, and she said: ” we will teach you, your English is good” (Which I don’t think it is good enough to teach children). Do you know what my answer was, I pulled my son out of the school and I never went back.
So there is no good schools Jeddah? Of course there are FEW good schools in Jeddah. If you don’t actually care about the Arabic and Islamic studies then probably the British schools are the safest option. But if you do care about Arabic and Islamic studies you could either go with Jeddah Knowledge School (Which is very expensive) who offers and American curriculum with Saudi Arabia Arabic and English curriculum, plus the fact that the school is highly organized due to the long history the school has. Or Advanced Generation School, who offers Canadian curriculum with Saudi Arabia Arabic and English curriculum and NOT cheap as well, plus the fact that the school still having administration issues and few other problems as the school still few years old only.
I had the Hyundai Sonata for just over a year now. When I choosed it I had in mind a medium range saloon with lots of window space. Because when you drive in Jeddah the last thing you need is blind spots. Unfortunately in Saudi Arabia, the cars that fit this description are limited as the market is dominated by Toyota Camry. Camry is in my opinion a mutant car which doesn’t know whether it is a family saloon or a family car so it is neither. In addition it is severly over-priced and the standard options are poor (last year it was around 80,000 SAR for basic mod). European cars are good but they were and still remain out of my price range. I didn’t even consider the Sonata until I walked into a showroom going after a Corolla (always safest option, but still over-priced) when I saw my car displayed there. I immediately loved the color (pearl white) and how it was complemented by the interior. I sat inside and I could get the spacious feeling I was looking for with a minimim of blind spots. The price was also reasonable (1694 SAR/month for 48 months and balloon payment of 20000 SAR). So I went for it.
A year on and I cannot say I have regreted this decision. Despite the new 2011 model, the 2009 model is ageing very well and still retain a characteristic shape. The car is reliable and gets me to where I want to go with minimum fuss. Not the fastest but it is a good cruiser and has very nice deceleration once you press the brakes. My only quarell with it is that it losses at least 1/3 of its power when the A/c is on (almost all year round in Jeddah) but with the safety package attached I cannot really complain.
Sonata is a safe car with good pedigree. I recommend it for young families who want a startup car in a new country like us.
